Artist Statement

I don't separate intuition and concept in my work - they tend to happen at the same time. Sometimes a clear idea leads, sometimes it shows up later, and sometimes it was there all along without me realizing it.

My background is in photography, which still influences how I build and compose. My current work is more physical, working with beeswax, reclaimed wood, and found objects. I'm interested in layering, in change, letting some of the texture and materials do some of the talking.

Words often elude me and it is through my art that I find solace and a voice to convey complex emotions. I believe that embracing and leaning into these emotions is crucial to understanding our true selves and fostering personal growth. Society often shies away from confronting such raw feelings, but I see great importance in exploring them for they lead us towards healing and self-discovery.

At a glance, my work is often perceived as dark, but it is through my art that I invite viewers to confront their own emotions. It is my hope that my creations serve as a catalyst for introspection and connection, resonating with others through visual storytelling. In a world that often seeks to numb emotions, my art stands as a reminder that true growth lies in embracing our humanity, seeking new perspectives, accepting the darkness within, and finding hope and clarity on the other side.

Artist Biography

April Adams of April Love Photography is a conceptual photographer and fine arts artist who currently lives in Northwest Indiana. Self-taught, she has been a photographer for twenty years. In her early work she began by photographing concepts in abandoned buildings. April later moved on to photographing commercial work such as weddings and portraits for clients although she has recently returned to focus on photography as a fine art through conceptual work.  Through photography, she strives to evoke emotion and thought - photos that tell a story and connect with the viewer on a personal level.

April's photography, encaustic paintings, and assemblage art have been published and exhibited. She loves incorporating encaustic painting with her photography taking the images a step further. Using photography and encaustic painting in tandem results in a harmonious fusion of media that ignites the imagination. The textures and layers of wax and oil paints add another dimension of etherealness.

As April strives to create conceptual pieces that carry profound meaning exploring darker facets of human emotion and existence, the incorporation of encaustic painting adds an additional layer of complexity inviting contemplation and reflection.
