- What to Wear to Your Family Session -
Welcome!
So you've booked a session and now you're wondering what you should wear.
I'd love to help you out. Let's start here:
1. What is your style? Be true to yourselves and your own personal style. Rock that!
2. What do you plan on doing with the photos? A big print above the fireplace? A collage of canvases in the living room?
Let's keep this in mind so you can coordinate colors with your decor.
3. Accentuate your best features. if you got it, flaunt it.
4. Heels are super cute and all but I definitely don't recommend them if we're shooting an adventurous nature session. If we're shooting in more of an urban
setting then by all means let's break in those heels!
5. Logos and fluorescent colors are a big no-no. Please don't. Logos are distracting and neon colors tend to cast onto your skin. Trust me when I say
they aren't flattering.
6. Stripes are also super fun but keep your body frame in mind when choosing horizontal or vertical stripes.
7. Matching white polo shirts and khaki shorts/pants are prohibited. LOL (laugh with me here)
8. Consider getting your hair or make-up done. I can recommend some very skilled hair stylists and make-up artists if you need recommendations.
9. If you have one, bring a blanket or quilt that coordinates well with your outfits.
10. Textures and layers always look great in photos!
11. Be comfortable. You want to be able to move, sit, bend down to engage with the littles.
12. If we are shooting outdoors be careful of wearing green. You don't want to blend into the background but rather stand out. If we are shooting outdoors in a nature setting
you will get lost in the background.
13. Don't forget to accessorize! Jewelry is a nice touch that polishes off a look. Ladies, don't shy away from hats. A nice floppy wide brimmed hat is always pretty and can make a nice prop too! Guys, what is your style? Kick it up a notch by adding layers. Pair a clean plaid shirt with a coordinating cardigan. Go nuts with a matching beanie if you're into hats. As for kids, a timeless appeal is always fun. Suspenders or a bowtie for little guys and crisp clean vintage looking dress for little girls.
Have kids? No worries!
Family sessions can be stressful. I know from my own experience of having family photos that it can be stressful. Keep these tips in mind to make it a pleasurable experience.
1. Kids pick up on emotions. Stay calm and they will stay calm. Deep breathes, mama. You'll all get through this and you will have fun photographs to cherish forever. I want this to be an enjoyable experience. Dads, this is for you too! I know most dads don't love having their photos taken but this is only 30-60 minutes of your time. I promise the end result will be worth it!
2. My style is more of a candid approach. I will have you interact with the kiddos and joke and play. Genuine smiles are the best kind. Plus this helps ease their tension and warm up to me more. Once they've warmed up we will try for the more posed 'smile at the camera' shots. I want their personalities to shine through and I want to catch that loving family interaction.
3. Bribery works! On the car ride over tell them they will get to go for ice cream afterwards if they cooperate. Or bring cookies or crackers. I suggest avoiding anything that will stain their mouths the color of their candy or will easily mess up their carefully selected clothing.
4. Does your Little have a lovey? By all means bring it. I can use it to get your child to smile and it will come in handy to comfort your child if they are shy.
5. Have fun!!! Let's make this fun together. Even if we have to tell obnoxious fart jokes to get the giggles rolling.....let's do this!
